How “Crafty” is Blue Moon?
According to one consumer, a little too crafty for not being craft at all. According to Court Documents, San Diego resident Evan Parent has commenced a class action suit against MillerCoors for misleading “consumers to believe that Blue Moon is an independently brewed, hand-crafted beer” when in fact, MillerCoors is not a craft brewer (relying on the Brewers Association’s definition of “craft brewer“). Such behaviour, it is alleged, has permitted MillerCoors to charge inflated prices for Blue Moon.
What does this all mean? Mr. Parent and his lawsuit have the potential** to set the framework for breweries trying to capitalize on the popularity of “craft” beer. It also means that if this case were tried in B.C., the definition of “craft” beer and “craft brewer” would play a significant part in the outcome.
**While I am not going to speculate on the outcome of this lawsuit or if anything will actually result from this filing, one thing we can acknowledge is that lawsuit is generating some heat with reports from various news outlets (see here and here and elsewhere on the web) running with the story.
